Weights & Measures Helpful Consumer Tips

The majority of businesses sell their products and services in an honest manner, however, mistakes can happen. Consumers must protect themselves by being AWARE!

Shopping Tips:

  • Check your store receipts for accuracy. Were you charged the correct advertised or posted price? Calculate the percent off discount. Was the proper discount received?

  • Packaging can be deceptive! The "Family Size" is not necessarily the best value. Compare price per ounce/pound between sizes offered for sale.

  • Almost everything we purchase at a grocery store is packaged and has a weight statement. Be aware that the weight of the container or wrapping must not be included in the weight statement.

  • When a scale is used in a transaction, observe the weighing. Did the scale indicator read zero before the item was weighed? Note: a weight indication (display) must be visible on the customer's side of the scale.

  • When purchasing bulk firewood, make sure you get a receipt showing the seller's name, address, phone number and the price paid. Write down the license plate number of the delivery vehicle.

  • When purchasing meat, fish or poultry from a door-to-door salesperson, each package must accurately display the price per pound.

Gasoline Service Station tips:

  • Verify the posted price for gasoline is the actual price being charged at the dispenser.

  • Before you begin dispensing fuel, make sure the meter starts at zero. When the transaction is completed and before you hang up the nozzle, make sure meter is not advancing on its own.

  • Did your vehicle stop running immediately after refueling? Possible water contamination may have occurred.

  • Did you purchase motor vehicle fuel and need air or water? Did you receive the air or water for free? This service must be made available at no cost to customers who purchase motor vehicle fuel.

  • Are you disabled and need assistance refueling your vehicle? A service station must post if they offer or do not offer refueling service to disabled drivers. If the service station provides service to disabled drivers the price charged for the vehicle fuel shall be no greater than the self-service price.
