Below are examples of three mailers currently plaguing homeowners in counties throughout California. The first involves the Homeowner’s Exemption. This mailer offers to process the exemption for a fee such as $38.  Homeowners should be aware that they can submit a request for the Homeowner’s Exemption for free using this form [PDF].

A second and third, recently discovered mailer involve Proposition 8 and Appeals. Property owners are advised in a letter that their property may be eligible for a decline-in-value reassessment. A company charges a sum of money to submit the request to San Bernardino County. Taxpayers should know that Proposition 8 reassessment requests may be submitted directly to the Assessor's Office, free of charge, here

Appeals may be submitted to the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors free of charge. Please see the Free Services section of our website here for more information.
