What is rabies?
How old must my dog be before he/she needs a rabies shot? Where can I get a rabies shot for my pet? How long is a rabies shot good for? At what age or when do I have to purchase a dog license? Why do I have to buy a dog license? My dog never leaves the yard. Can I come to your office to purchase a dog license? Do I need to bring my dog or any papers with me? Do you have a special dog license rate for senior citizens? I lost my dog license, how can I get another one and what will it cost me? Does my cat have to be licensed? What other vaccinations are necessary to keep my pet healthy?
Dogs need their first rabies shot at 4 months of age.
You should contact your private veterinarian or you can check with local pet stores who sometimes hold vaccination clinics. In addition, the San Bernardino County Animal Care & Control Program hosts vaccination clinics beginning in May and usually lasting through the beginning of August.
An animal's very first rabies vaccination is good for one year, regardless of age. After that the rabies vaccine is good for 3 years. Contact your veterinarian for more information on vaccinations.
A dog license is required for all dogs at 4 months of age. If you adopt or get a new dog, you are allowed up to 15 days to purchase a license for your new pet.
Licenses are required for all dogs four months of age and older. This is a state law that applies to ALL dogs including dogs that stay in the house and dogs that never leave the yard. A license tells people that your dog has been vaccinated against rabies, which is a fatal disease that is transferable to humans. In addition, a dog license is the best way of getting your dog returned to you in case he or she ever becomes lost.
Yes. Licenses are available at both of our shelters as well as at our main office in San Bernardino, which is located at 351 N. Mt. View Avenue. It is not necessary to bring your dog with you, however, you will need to bring the dog's current rabies vaccination certificate and a spay/neuter certificate if applicable. Also, if you are a senior citizen applying for the reduced senior rate license, please bring proof of age.
Yes. Senior citizens (65 yrs. & older) pay $9.00/year for a dog license if their dog is spayed/neutered. However, if their dog is not spayed/neutered they pay the regular price of $60.00/year. These fees also apply for disabled persons.
A replacement tag can be obtained by mail for only $3.00. For more information you may contact the County's Pet Licensing Office at 1 (800) 472-5609.
At this time, California law does not require cats to be licensed, only dogs. However, we do have a voluntary cat licensing program. The cost for an intact cat license is $9.00. If the cat is altered the cost is $6.00 (proof of spay/neuter surgery is required to receive the reduced rate). If you are a senior/disabled citizen with an altered cat the cost is $3.00 (proof of your age and your cat's spay/neuter surgery is required to receive the reduced rate). A rabies vaccination certificate is also required before a cat license can be issued. You may apply for a cat license by mail or you may visit our main office, which is located at 351 N. Mt. View Avenue, San Bernardino, CA 92415.
Many vaccinations may be recommended depending on your area, environment, etc. Contact your private veterinarian for more information on keeping your pet healthy.
