Adult Volunteers

Attention Animal Lovers!  The Devore Animal Shelter has a brand new Volunteer Program.  We are finally ready to start interviewing potential volunteers and are looking to host our very first Orientation in January of 2007.  Please review the information below to give you a brief overview of how this new program works.  Thank you for your interest in helping the homeless animals in your community!

The Devore Animal Shelter relies on services provided by volunteers. Anyone who is 18 years of age or older can work in our shelters as a volunteer. All volunteers must attend an interview (interviews are available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12:00 - 3:00 pm, please call 1-800-472-5609 and ask to speak with the Volunteer Coordinator to make an appointment), complete an application, attend a volunteer orientation session, take a test, and complete individual training sessions BEFORE beginning their services at the shelter. Not all applicants will be selected for volunteer work, due to limited space. Some of the activities that volunteers participate in include:

NEW VOLUNTEERS – new volunteers will gain hands-on experience by learning to socialize shelter animals as well as assist with cleaning/feeding procedures. All volunteers must complete 20 hours of volunteer service as a new volunteer before being considered for the more advanced volunteer roles.

Animal Socializing
You will learn how to properly handle the animals, how to move them from cage to cage, and the correct way to walk the dogs on a leash.  In addition, this is the time to give them lots of TLC!

Preparing/Cleaning Cat Litter Boxes
You can help the staff keep the cat room clean by preparing cat litter boxes that can be easily changed out during the day if a mess occurs.
Cleaning
You can help us maintain a clean, disease-free surrounding for our animals. A clean shelter encourages people to visit and adopt animals. You can hose down kennels, rake the corral area, wash litter boxes, empty trashcans, and clean widows.

You can help the shelter staff provide food and water for the animals in our care.  Check throughout the day to make sure animals have fresh water in their bowls.  Make sure you check the cats in the cattery and the barnyard animals as well.
ADVANCED VOLUNTEERS – Volunteers that have completed their 20 hours of service as a new volunteer will then be evaluated to determine if they may move up to become an advanced volunteer.  Advanced volunteers will be trained on the following responsibilities: Shelter Greeter, Grooming, Cat Cage ID Cards, Off-Site Pet Adoption Fairs, Lost/Found Guides, & Office Assistant.
