November 2011

Welcome Upland to the Fourth District!

On October 27, 2011, Supervisor Gary Ovitt's district grew to represent Upland residents who live south of Foothill Blvd. Those residents north of Foothill Blvd. will continue to be well represented by Supervisor Janice Rutherford.

In order to get to know my new constituents in Upland, I will be hosting some upcoming events in the community. Please call my office or check my webpage for updates on the locations and dates for these events.

You can view a detailed map of all five Board of Supervisors districts here.

San Bernardino County Launches Annual Support Our Troops Drive

As we approach Veterans Day on November 11, I would like to encourage San Bernardino County residents and non-profits to think about how we can honor our men and women who are currently serving our Country.

County residents will have a chance to provide badly needed assistance to the families of military troops in harm’s way this holiday season. Supervisor Ovitt and his fellow County Supervisors have launched the County’s fifth annual "Support Our Troops" campaign and is urging county residents to donate gift cards, gas cards, and pre-paid phone cards to be distributed to local National Guard Units and the family support offices at Fort Irwin and Twentynine Palms. Cash donations will be accepted as well and converted into gift, gas, and phone cards.

Support Our Troops 2011 will be coordinated by the County Department of Veterans Affairs. Information on the program and how to donate is available at http://hss.sbcounty.gov/VA/, or by calling the County Department of Veterans Affairs at (909) 387-5516.

Supervisor Ovitt Honors Action Awards in Montclair as the Small Business of the Month

Picture of Action Awards employees
Every month Supervisor Gary C. Ovitt accepts the nominations of small businesses that are successfully working to improve our local economy and are making a difference in the community.

The September Small Business of the Month is Action Awards of Montclair. The business has operated in Montclair since 1980. They are located at 9014 Benson Avenue in Montclair. The father and son team of Ed and Michael Hale are co-owners.

“Action Awards has demonstrated the values of entrepreneurship and leadership,” said Supervisor Gary Ovitt. “Thousands of my constituents have an item of recognition that was made by this small business. The Hale Family and their employees should be commended for their hard work, especially when the economy makes things so difficult. Small businesses are vital to the economy of San Bernardino County.”

Action Awards has been involved with and provided services for numerous community activities including:
  • Montclair High School Student Athlete of the Year Awards
  • Jeremy Moon Foundation
  • State Farm Collegiate Open Golf Tournament
  • Providing and producing over 100,000 awards to local, regional and national organizations every year.
Nominated businesses need to be located within the Cities of Chino, Chino Hills, Montclair, Ontario, and a portion of Upland. Small businesses can be nominated by emailing: SupervisorOvitt@sbcounty.gov or call my district office at (909) 465-1895. Please include the name of the business, business owner’s name, address, and the reason why you are nominating that small business.

Highlighted County Program of the Month

Junior Fishing Workshops

San Bernardino County is home to great Regional Parks that are open to our residents and offer many different amenities.

Children ages 7-13 can learn the art and fun of fishing at Junior Fishing Workshops, scheduled one Saturday a month from November 2011 to March 2012 at various County Regional Parks. They will then get a chance to test their skill in a two hour open fishing session. All equipment and tackle will be provided. Each child will receive a souvenir T-shirt. Children must be accompanied by an adult chaperone. Workshops are held rain or shine and are non-refundable.
  • Prado Regional Park in Chino will hold a workshop on 1/21/2012
  • Cucamonga—Guasti Regional Park in Ontario will hold a workshop on 2/18/2012
