San Bernardino County has long been home to a key cluster of aerospace firms, owing to its history of military air bases. The cluster contains industries ranging from specialty metals for aerospace parts to sophisticated space technologies.
Kelly Space and Technology, Inc., located at the San Bernardino International Airport, is a privately held commercial aerospace systems and technology development company. Its aim is to advance critical technologies through its Research and Development Center by providing a hub for cutting edge aviation and space technologies.
Among its most significant projects, Kelly Space and Technology was responsible for developing reusable launch vehicles. The company’s patented tow launch technology dramatically reduces launch risk and the cost per pound of payload. In another noteworthy effort, Kelly Space created the Jet and Rocket Engine Test Site (JRETS). JRETS is a world class commercial center featuring fast turnaround testing of liquid rocket, jet and special purpose engines for commercial and national defense applications. It’s available to a broad range of commercial and government customers and other organizations and used to advance propulsion and related systems.
