Afton Canyon is located off interstate 15, about 35 miles northeast of Barstow. The Afton Canyon Natural Area is 42,000 acres. Today this unique spot in the Southern California desert is known as “The Little Grand Canyon” and is one of the only places where the Mojave River flows above ground year-round.
Many animals call this area home, including herons, egrets, prairie falcons, golden eagles, bighorn sheep, mountain lions, bobcats, tortoises, snakes, lizards and iguanas. The rare Vermillion Flycatcher and Summer Tanager have also been spotted in the canyon.
Visitors can camp, hike, backpack and ride horses in Afton Canyon.
The campground is located three miles south of the Afton exit on interstate 15.
