Brad Mitzelfelt is Vice-Chairman of the Board of Supervisors for San Bernardino
County, California – the elected governing body of the largest and 12th most populated
county in the contiguous United States. His Mojave Desert district includes the
incorporated municipalities of
Victorville,
Apple Valley,
Hesperia and
Adelanto in the Victor Valley, as well
as
Needles on the Colorado
River. His First District also includes unincorporated communities spanning more
than 15,000 square miles from Wrightwood in the San Gabriel Mountains to Trona to
Baker, four military bases and two national park units, and bordering Arizona and
Nevada.
During his tenure over the past five years, Supervisor Mitzelfelt significantly
helped advance an expansion of the county’s jail system during a time when counties
have been bracing to take on thousands of additional inmates and parolees due to
the state’s prison overcrowding. He has also increased fire protection, child-predator
controls and gang suppression and intervention. He initiated a sex-offender tracking
team within the Sheriffs Department and a National Award-winning program that identifies
illegal immigrants in High Desert jails.
During the recent economic downturn, the Supervisor has helped stimulate the local
economy by helping secure hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of infrastructure
construction, including the Jerry Lewis High Desert Government Center in Hesperia,
new and improved roads and fire stations, a new library, and significant new park
projects. He acquired and re-opened the Victor Valley Museum in Apple Valley, and
donated the Boys and Girls Club of the Victor Valley’s building in Adelanto.
Supervisor Mitzelfelt helped establish and steered well over a million dollars toward
Victor Valley College’s School of Aviation Technology at the
Southern California Logistics Airport in Victorville – also known as the
former George Air Force Base.
Mr. Mitzelfelt represents the county on several dozen
boards and commissions at the local, regional and federal
level. He is Chairman of the
Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District, the
Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCo), the Victor
Valley Economic Development Authority, and the High Desert Corridor Authority. He
is a member of the
Southern California
Association of Governments metropolitan planning organization, the Public
Lands Steering Committee of the
National
Association of Counties, and the federal Bureau of Land Management’s California
Desert District Advisory Council. He is also Immediate Past President of
San Bernardino Associated Governments (SANBAG), the County
Transportation and regional planning authority. As SANBAG President, he initiated
the council of governments' first annual General Assembly during which he signed
the first-ever Countywide Vision Statement on behalf of the county and its 24 cities.
Brad is a veteran of 10 years of active and reserve military service. He achieved
the rank of Staff Sergeant and served as a U.S. Marine in Operations Desert Storm
and Desert Shield in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. He is a Life Member of the Veterans
of Foreign Wars.
Supervisor Mitzelfelt earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business and Management
from the University of Redlands, and a Certificate in Economic Development Management
from the University of California Riverside Extension. He lives in Wrightwood with
his wife, Megan, and their two children.
