Free Sunday and Open Holiday Monday at the County Museum

The San Bernardino County Museum invites the public to visit the museum with no admission fee on Sunday, September 3. Visitors will enjoy special exhibits as well as displays of specimens and artifacts that interpret local history, anthropology, geology, paleontology, and biological sciences in regional context. The museum will also be open on Monday, the Labor Day holiday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. when regular admission fees will apply.

At 2 pm on Sunday, Curator of Paleontology Eric Scott will give a lecture, “Why Doesn’t the Museum Sell Fossils?” reviewing the ethics behind selling fossils. “Fossils are big business these days, commanding hundreds or thousands -- sometimes even millions -- of auction dollars,” says Scott.  “If fossils have such great monetary value, why don't museums sell their less important fossils to generate funds?  Is it because fossils are worth more than their strictly monetary value?  Could it be because all fossils are important?"

Special exhibits at the museum include “If These Buckets Could Talk” in the Fisk Gallery; “Working for a Living” in the Schuiling Gallery, and “Native American Traditions: Pottery from the Pueblos,” and “A Textile Odyssey” in the Hall of History.

The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays and holiday Mondays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free for everyone on Sunday, September 3. Regular admission is $6 (adult), $5 (student and senior), and $4 (child aged 5 to 12). Children under 5 and Museum Association members are admitted free. Parking is free. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org.
