Serrano Creation Story Explored During Museum Day Trip

The San Bernardino County Museum Association will offer a day trip to the San Bernardino Mountains called “The Serrano Creation Story: A Native American Perspective” on Saturday, August 19. The trip will be repeated on Saturday, October 7. This day-long program includes the telling of the Serrano creation story and a trip to important related sites in the San Bernardino Mountains. The program is designed for adults and youth age 12 and above. The cost of $25 per person ($20 for Museum Association members) includes transportation, beverages, and snacks.

Witness the beginning of Yuhaviatam, the People of the Pines. San Manuel’s Tribal Unity and Cultural Awareness Program Director James Ramos will tell his people’s creation story and explore their special relationship with the mountains. Daniel McCarthy, Tribal Relations Program Manager for the San Bernardino National Forest, will also share insights into ways the Serrano people have lived in their summer mountain home.

The program starts at the County Museum in Redlands at 7:45 a.m. After an introduction, participants will board passenger vans and travel to the Big Bear Lake area to visit some of the sites mentioned in the Serrano creation story. Curator of Anthropology Adella Schroth and Curator of Education Jolene Redvale will host the trip. The vans will return to the museum by 5:00 p.m.

“This program is a great example of how the people of San Manuel are working to share their stories and their history with their neighbors,” said Jolene Redvale, museum curator of education. “We respect the work of San Manuel’s Tribal Unity and Cultural Awareness Program, and we are honored to have Mr. Ramos providing his insight and a new way of looking at some of the places we know so well.”

Space is limited for each trip, and advance reservations are required by August 11. Registrations forms are available at the museum’s web site, www.sbcountymuseum.org, at the museum, or by calling the Museum Association at (909) 307-2669 ext. 250.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians as a major sponsor of the museum’s special exhibit, “Native American Traditions: Pottery from the Pueblos.”
