How did Native Americans use weapons and tools to catch food before there were grocery stores? Visitors at the San Bernardino County Museum can find out first-hand at the “First Weapons Field Day” at the museum on Saturday, October 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is offered free with museum admission.

During the field day, children and adults will be invited to try their hands in some friendly competition as they use spears and spear-throwers, rabbit sticks, and other tools used for hunting. Museum visitors can make a traditional Indian game that was played both for fun and to sharpen skills needed by successful hunters. They may also join in foot races, relays, and even the “Screaming Game.”

Weapons Field Day is offered in conjunction with the museum’s current special exhibit, “First Weapons: The Art of Hunting Game,” open in the Hall of History through November 6. This exhibit in the Native American Traditions series is sponsored in part by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians.

The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is $6 (adult), $5 (student or senior), and $4 (child aged 5 to 12).
