Digging Fossils at the County Museum
“Fossils-Can You Dig It?” is the theme of a San Bernardino County Museum Family Fun Day on Saturday, June 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Families will explore the world of fossils and see Ice Age fossils on exhibit in both the permanent paleontology displays and in “Seldom Seen: Curators’ Choices from the Collections.” Then, using real paleontologists’ tools in a recreated “fossil dig,” kids can find their own “fossils” to take home. A $2 excavation fee is requested in addition to museum general admission.
“This is one of the most popular family activities we’ve ever done,” said Nancy Kirkwood, museum educator. “Of course, we don’t dig for real fossils, which are protected by law. But by using real tools, everyone has the chance to experience how painstaking a task recovering fossils can be. And the dirt really flies when the kids-and their parents-start digging!”
Family Fun Days are designed for parents and grandparents with children ages 3 to 12. Activities are led by the museum education division and volunteers from the Museum Youth Club.
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is $6 (adult), $5 (student or senior), and $4 (child aged 5 to 12). Children under five and Museum Association members are admitted free. Parking is free. The museum’s Garden Café will be open for beverages and snacks between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and the Exploration Station live animal gallery will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org or call (909) 307-2669 / TDD/TTY: (909) 792-1462.
