“Egg-citing” Family Fun at
the Museum
Museum Director Robert McKernan will lead visitors on a “Second
Floor Field Trip” at the San Bernardino County Museum on
Saturday, October 23 at 1 p.m. Using the museum’s world-famous
bird and egg collections, McKernan will give a special tour emphasizing
how to identify birds when you’re outdoors, whether out
in the field or in your backyard.
Between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. the Museum Youth Club will offer a
variety of family activities that will help answer such questions
as which animals lay eggs and how birds make nests. Children will
have an opportunity to make an egg-ceptional mobile. Families
can inspect nests and eggs up close and find out about the animals
that made them. Egg-citing games and activities will be offered;
a $1 materials fee is charged for each craft activity in addition
to museum admission.
“The San Bernardino County Museum has the fifth largest
collection of eggs on exhibit in the world,” said McKernan.
“Our exhibits of land and water birds are arranged by habitat,
making it easy to pick out species that are both common and occasional
visitors in our deserts, mountains, and valleys. Birders have
a few “tricks” they use to identify birds, and I’ll
be sharing some of these techniques with our visitors.”
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street
exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. Admission is $6 (adult),
$5 (senior or student) and $4 (child aged 5 to 12). Children under
5 and Museum Association members are admitted free. Parking is
free, and the facility is handicapped-accessible. Lunch, snacks,
and beverages are available at the museum’s Garden Café
from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org
