“Going East” Museum Family
Fun Day
Families are invited to “go east” at a Family Fun
Day at the San Bernardino County Museum on Sunday, September 12
from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The program, organized by the Museum Youth
Club and the museum’s education division, is free with museum
admission. Each craft activity is $1 each per person to cover
the cost of materials.
“We chose the theme of this Family Fun Day to complement
our new exhibit, ‘Signs in the Designs’,” explained
Nancy Kirkwood, Museum Youth Club coordinator. “The exhibit
looks closely at blue and white embroideries from China and explores
the meaning of the patterns used on the pieces. We’ll be
working with symbols and colors during the Family Fun Day, as
well.”
Participants in the activities will hear the story behind the
famous Blue Willow plate pattern. They will also have the opportunity
to create their own “blue willow” plate, and can construct
a paper lantern decorated with traditional Chinese symbols. The
new exhibit, free with general admission, will inspire visitors
to pick out designs and symbols used more than a century ago by
Chinese artists.
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street
exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. Admission is $6 (adult),
$5 (senior or student) and $4 (child aged 5 to 12). Children under
5 and Museum Association members are admitted free. Parking is
free, and the facility is handicapped-accessible. For more information,
visit www.sbcountymuseum.org or call (909) 307-2669 / TDD/TTY: (909) 792-1462.
