Katsinas and More: Museum Family Fun Day

Families will learn about Katsina dolls and the culture that creates them at the San Bernardino County Museum on Saturday, June 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.. The activities, suitable for families with children age 5 and older, are organized by the museum education division and the Museum Youth Club.

Visitors will walk through the “Hopi Katsinas” exhibit where they will pick out their favorites and learn about the people who made them. Participants in the program will also explore authentic musical instruments that might have been used during ceremonial dances, and will have the opportunity to play some of them. Hopi artifacts will be compared to those of the local Serrano band to facilitate discussion of how Native American cultures are distinctly different from one another.

Children will learn how local Indians wrote and get a chance to try writing their own messages on animal skin replicas. A $1 materials fee in addition to museum admission will be requested for this activity.

“Katsinas and More” is presented in conjunction with “Native American Traditions: Hopi Katsinas,” showing in the museum’s Fisk Gallery through September 12. The exhibit is sponsored in part by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians.

The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. Admission is $6 (adult), $5 (senior or student) and $4 (child aged 5 to 12). Children under 5 and Museum Association members are admitted free. Parking is free, and the facility is handicapped-accessible.
