Worth A Thousand Words
Images from the Sun and Redlands Daily Facts Negative Collections
Twentieth century photographic images present an opportunity
to look back into the past and gain a better understanding of
our recent history. Fifty such photographs will be exhibited in
“Worth a Thousand Words” at the San Bernardino County
Museum from July 10 through October 31, 2004. The exhibit is free
with museum admission.
The images were selected and printed from more than 12,000 negatives
dating from the 1950s through the 1970s in the museum’s
San Bernardino Sun-Telegram and Redlands Daily Facts collections.
They were first printed to illustrate newspaper stories. Today,
viewers can look at these images from a different perspective:
a chance to think about the subject matter it represents in the
context of history.
“These photographs offer insights into commerce, culture,
politics, the economy, and the natural environment almost fifty
years ago,” said Museum Archivist Michele Nielsen. “At
the same time, just as they were originally chosen for the newspapers,
we selected some images for this exhibit purely for their light-hearted
and often humorous content. Each represents a valuable illustrative
tool we can use to find out more about our past.”
Whether with a view of a young Mick Jagger behind the scenes
at the San Bernardino concert of the Rolling Stones or an image
of recruits leaving for the Vietnam War, these skillful photographers
captured events and personalities at a fixed point in time. In
doing so, the photographs continue to stir emotions and reflect
history both personal to the viewer and collective to our society.
“Worth a Thousand Words: Images from the Sun and Redlands
Daily Facts Negative Collections” was created by the Inland
Empire Archival Heritage Center, a part of the San Bernardino
County Museum Archives, and is made possible through generous
support from the Institute for Museum and Library Services and
Congressman Jerry Lewis, representing California’s 41st
Congressional District. The Sun and the Redlands Daily Facts are
exhibition media partners.
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street
