Free Third Sunday at the County Museum

The San Bernardino County Museum continues special Third Sunday programming, which features free general admission, family activities, and a presentation by a museum curator, on June 20. This Sunday, free admission is sponsored by Gresham, Savage, Nolan & Tilden, LLC.

Adella Schroth, the museum’s curator of anthropology, will speak on “Rock Art of Arizona and New Mexico.” In her illustrated presentation, Schroth will lead visitors on an exploration of pictographs (rock paintings) and petroglyphs (rock carvings) in the Southwest, emphasizing designs that relate to the Katsina Way. Visitors will be able to see the museum’s special exhibit, “Native American Traditions: Hopi Katsinas” to compare the rock art in the presentation to symbols used on actual artifacts.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Museum Youth Club invites visitors to get involved with rock art in “This Really Rocks!” Children will learn how Native Americans drew without crayons or paper, will try to decipher the meanings of rock art symbols, and will draw pictographs and carve petroglyphs. These activities are designed for families with children between 3 and 12 years of age. There is a $1.00 program fee per person.

In addition to “Native American Traditions: Hopi Katsinas,” sponsored in part by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, visitors can also enjoy the closing day of two other special exhibits: “Unearthed! Fossils in the museum collections” and “Outdoor Adventures in San Bernardino County.”

The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking is free, and the facility is handicapped-accessible.
