Free Third Sunday at the County Museum
The San Bernardino County Museum continues special Third Sunday
programming, which features free general admission, family activities,
and a presentation by a museum curator, on April 18. This Sunday,
free admission is sponsored by San Manuel Band of Mission Indians.
Chris Sagebiel, the museum's curator of geology, will speak on
"Fossils, DNA, and Fossil DNA" at 2:00 p.m. Sagebiel,
a graduate of the University of Texas, is pursuing a Ph.D. at
the University of California, Riverside, in the Graduate Group
in Genetics, Genomics, and Bioinformatics. He is studying an array
of extinct mammals from South America known as astrapotheres,
notoungulates, pyrotheres, and litopterns-some similar to rabbits,
others camel-like creatures with trunks like elephants. He will
discuss his research, radical new ideas that have resulted from
DNA studies, and how studying fossils relates to understanding
the living world.
From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the Museum Youth Club invites visitors to
explore the world of fossils and paleontologists in "Fossils!
Can You Dig It?" Children will get to dig up a "fossil"
to take home, piece together some "fossils," and play
a fossil game. Sponsored by the Museum Youth Club, these activities
are designed for families with children between 3 and 12 years
of age. There is a $1.00 program fee per person.
In addition to the museum's permanent displays, visitors will
see several special exhibits. In the Fisk Gallery, "Native
American Traditions: Hopi Katsinas," features dozens of Katsina
(Kachina) dolls from the museum collections, presented in the
context of the Hopi tradition and how it compares with traditions
of other local, regional, and North American tribes. "Hopi
Katsinas" is sponsored in part by the San Manuel Band of
Mission Indians. Visitors can also enjoy "Unearthed! Fossils
in the museum collections" in the Hall of History and images
from the history division archives in "Outdoor Adventures
in San Bernardino County" in the Schuiling Gallery.
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street
exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays
through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking is free, and the
facility is handicapped-accessible. The museum's Garden Café
