Workshop on
Color and Dyeing
The Inland
Empire Handweavers Guild will present a two-day workshop, "Serendipity
in a Cup: Color Essence for Hand Weavers," on March 6 and 7 from 9 a.m.
to 4 p.m. at the San Bernardino County Museum. Pre-registration is required
for this workshop, led by Kris Abshire from Wasilla, Arkansas. The cost is $120
for both days.
The workshop will provide methods and techniques for applying permanent,
colorfast dyes and paints to hand-woven cloth. Class discussion, instructor-supplied
samples, slides, and hands-on experimentation will allow participants to learn
basic color theory as it relates to design considerations and color interplay
in weave structure.
"With a 'no limits' design approach in color application to both
warp and weft, available only to hand weavers, we will explore various techniques
of precise imagery as well as serendipitous freedom," said Abshire.
During the workshop, participants will design, dye, and finish warp and
weft for two silk scarves: one in precise imagery, the other with a watercolor
effect. "All this will be accomplished with colors in a cup," explained
Abshire. "No boiling pots. No cumbersome buckets, and no chemicals added
to the dye liquids. Students will learn that using the simplest inexpensive
tools and supplies can apply to virtually any weaving project."
The workshop is designed for adults with weaving skill levels from beginning
to advanced. For more information and to request a registration form, call Jean
Long, (760) 343-0816.
